Legendary entertainer Nell Carter<\/a> was born Nell Ruth Hardy in Birmingham, Alabama in 1948. After performing at church and on local radio, then graduating from A.H. Parker High School, she moved to New York City to pursue better opportunities. In an interview with the Associated Press<\/a>, she said, “When I was growing up, it was not something you aspired to,” she said in 1988. “I was a weirdo to want to be in show business. Most kids wanted to be teachers or nurses.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carter returned to Birmingham to record Take Me Home with the A.H. Parker High School Choir and the Birmingham Heritage Band to benefit her alma mater in 1983. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
